Announcing our 2020 Design Team

NEW LONDON, CT – 7th Regiment is thrilled to announce the return of its entire Design Team for the 2020 Drum Corps International Season!

“7th Regiment is fortunate to have an amazing and talented group of musicians and artists overseeing the design of our 2020 program,” said Kevin Lowery, director of 7th Regiment. “Having consistency within our team is so important and this group of individuals will build off of the foundation they set in 2019. I can’t wait for our members and the marching community to see what they have in store!”

JACK TULLY (Music Coordinator / Brass Arranger)

Jack Tully is an active designer, arranger, composer, adjudicator, and consultant based in the New England area.

Jack is excited to return for his 10th year with 7th Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps, where he has served as Brass Arranger since 2011 and Program Coordinator 2015 – 2019.  He has also been an instructor for The Royal Columbians Drum and Bugle Corps, East Coast Jazz Drum and Bugle Corps, and the Boston College Screaming Eagles Marching Band.

Jack began his drum corps career as a member of the Cadets of Bergen County in 1994 and 1995.  Jack received his BA from Boston College in 1996 and his MA from New England Conservatory of Music in 1998.  He has been an instrumental music teacher in the Woburn, MA Public Schools since 1998.

Jack is a freelance arranger and composer, and has arranged both wind and front ensemble music for various scholastic units throughout the country.  He has also served as an adjudicator for NESBA, USBands, MAC, and MBDA.

 

RACHEL LOWERY (Visual Coordinator / Color Guard Designer)

Originally, from Indiana, Rachel is a graduate of La Porte High School. Rachel holds a BA in Liberal Studies from Southern Connecticut State University with a concentration in Theatre. Before coming to Connecticut, she was a student at Purdue University, where she spent three years with the Purdue Modern Dance Company.

Rachel was a member of the Phantom Regiment Color Guard in 2001 and 2002. After drum corps, she trained to be an educator with Fred J. Miller Inc., and taught color guard clinics around the United States for three summers. She also went on to be a private clinician for programs all over the country through her work with FJM. Rachel continued her teaching with many programs in the Midwest, including La Porte and Warren Central High Schools.

Rachel has been an active guard educator since her move to the east. She has worked with the color guards of the Norwalk High School and Trumbull High School marching bands, serving as the movement specialist for both. Rachel was also the director of the Trumbull High School A Guard for four years.

Rachel is a Labor and Postpartum Doula and also works for Acelleron, a maternal medical company. She lives in the New Haven area with her husband and three kids. She is very excited for her new role with 7th Regiment.

 

IAN FLINT (Drill/Visual Design)

Ian has been active in the marching activity for over 20 years. He was a member of the Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps from 1998-2000 and then was a member of the visual staff from 2004-2007. From 2014-2017 he was on staff with the Oregon Crusaders and served in many roles including Program Coordinator, Visual Caption Supervisor and Drill Designer. He is now entering his third season as the drill designer for 7th Regiment In DCI Open Class. As a drill writer, he designs for over 30 ensembles a year and is an active clinician for groups all across the country.

Ian holds a Bachelors in Music Performance (Tuba) from West Chester University of Pennsylvania. He currently works as Director of Bands at Bellows Free Academy in Fairfax Vermont. There he teaches 5th-12th grade instrumental lessons and also runs all instrumental ensembles for the district including three concert bands, two jazz bands, pep band, and marching band. The BFA Fairfax band program has over 160 members and all ensembles consistently receive superior ratings at festival. Previous to moving to Vermont, Ian worked for Dartmouth Public Schools (Dartmouth, MA) as the District Wide Brass Specialist. He served as a show designer and visual coordinator for Dartmouth’s marching band and indoor percussion ensembles. In his nine years there the marching band won five USBands National Championships and the Indoor Percussion won three WGI World Class Championships. 

Ian currently resides in Winooski, VT.

 

IAN HALE (Front Ensemble Arranger)

Ian Hale received degrees in percussion performance from the University of Calgary and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst where his teachers included Dr. Glenn Price, Eduardo Leandro and DCI Hall of Fame member Thom Hannum. He has studied marimba with Leigh Howard Stevens, Gordon Stout, and She-e Wu. He was a member of the music faculty at UMass from 2007-2008 and served as the Assistant Director of Bands for the Calgary Stampede Showband from 2009-2011. He is currently the Percussion Director for Spirit of America from Orleans, Massachusetts. This is his second season as the front ensemble arranger for 7th Regiment.

Ian has worked with many ensembles including the Calgary Stampede Showband, Spirit of America, Thomas Jefferson High School, Dartmouth Indoor Percussion, United Percussion, Boston University and the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band. He was a member of the percussion staff for the Glassmen, the Magic of Orlando, Madison Scouts, Carolina Crown and the Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps. He is currently on the percussion staff for the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps.  

Ian is endorsed by Vic Firth Inc., Remo Inc. and Zildjian Corporation.

 

ALEX BELTRAN (Battery Arranger)

Alex Beltran is an active writer, teacher, performer, and clinician based in New England. He holds a Masters Degree in music history from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst where he also received an undergraduate degree in percussion performance. While at UMass Alex has worked as teaching assistant to Thom Hannum, studied under Ayano Kataoka, and currently teaches and arranges for the UMass Minuteman Marching Band. 

Alex’s marching career began with the Connecticut Hurricanes from 2008-2010 before marching in the quad line at The Cadets from 2011-2014. During his time at The Cadets, the group won the 2011 DCI Championship and the 2013 Fred Sanford High Percussion Award. He was battery section leader from the 2012-2014 seasons. Alex was also a member of the nationally renowned UMass Drum Line from 2010-2013, where he performed at PASIC in 2011and the 2013 Macy’s Day Parade. He was both quad line and battery section leader for the 2013 season.

After aging out Alex immediately began working with top drum corps and percussion programs, teaching The Cadets battery during the 2015 and 2016 seasons before transitioning to the Boston Crusaders for the 2017 season through the present. During this time, he has also worked with top WGI groups including United Percussion, Infinity Percussion, and Spirit of America. While pursuing his Masters studies, Alex maintained an active schedule working with and writing for schools across the United States and putting on clinics both with the UMass percussion program and as a stand alone presenter. 

Alex is currently the Battery Caption Manager for the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle corps, where he handles the day to day teaching, equipment, and logistical needs of the battery and coordinate the staff. He is also the Battery Arranger and Caption Manager for consistent WGI Independent World Finalist United Percussion, where he works closely with Ian Hale and Mike Bishop. He is ecstatic to be back on the design team for 7th Regiment for his second year, and is looking forward to continuing to work with such an amazing team. 

When he is not traveling or teaching, Alex enjoys exploring scenic Western Massachusetts, involving himself in the local live music scene, and learning about the history of Roman and Western Culture.

MIKE BISHOP (Sound & Audio Design)

Mike Bishop is a composer, music educator, designer, international clinician, and consultant creating for organizations around the world, including the West Chester University Incomparable Golden Ram Marching Band, United Percussion, and European X (Netherlands). Previously, Mike served on the staff or designed for the Crossmen, George Mason University, Spirit of ’52 (Germany), Cedar Park HS Timberwolf Band, Carolina Crown (2013 DCI World Championship), Rhythm X/The X Academy, Redline, Blue Stars, and was a founding Board of Directors member at Invictus.

As a producer, Mike is experienced in creating soundtracks for podcasts, commercials, dance teams, color guards, as well as samples and sound effects for the pageantry arts. He has composed and arranged hundreds of works for various scholastic, collegiate, independent, and corporate programs.

Mike is a Yamaha Artist, a proud endorser of Vic Firth sticks & mallets, Zildjian Cymbals, & Remo drum heads and a member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America. He has presented clinics at Music For All’s Bands of America Summer Symposium, the Texas Bandmasters Association Annual Convention, Western Carolina University Summer Symposium, Vivace Marching Band Leadership Camps, and throughout the United States, Western Europe, and Japan.
